Knights of Columbus

Who are the Knights?

The Knights of Columbus is a fraternal organization of men united to promote Catholic values through acts of charity, devotion and service. The Knights have a special interest in celebrating family life and friendship, helping members and families be more effective Catholics, and helping those who are less fortunate.

St. Margaret Mary Council 8100

Are you a practicing Catholic gentleman at least 18 years of age? Do you want to help others, the Church, and the community? If yes, then the Knights of Columbus is for you!

Membership in the Knights provides the opportunity for fellowship with other Catholic men – those who are of the same belief, who recognize the same duty to God, family, culture of life and the community. Our principles are CHAIRTY, UNITY, FRATERNITY and PATRIOTISM. We are an independent international organization not answerable to the Church or pastor but to our own authority structure. However, we consider ourselves a strong right arm to the Church and carry out works that serve the ministries of the parish.

The Venerable Michael McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus in 1882 at St. Mary’s in New Haven, Ct. As a Catholic lay organization committed to charity to those in need and fraternity with fellow brother Knights. Today, Knights and their families remain true to these principles. You and your family will benefit from membership in the Knights of Columbus.

Our St. Margaret Mary Council sponsors many fund-raising events to benefit our Church, such as Lenten Friday Fish Fry dinners, Send-A-Kid to Camp breakfast and a pancake breakfast where proceeds go to our parish. We also participate in community events, including the National PWID Drive in which we pass out Tootsie Rolls for donations which are given to an organization that helps Persons With Intellectual Disabilities such as the Special Olympics program. We participate in the Back-Pack Buddies program which provide clothing and supplies for school children. We also sponsor local Blood Drives 3 times a year and conduct a Highway cleaning twice a year.

History of the Knights of Columbus

Father Michael J. McGivney and a handful of Catholic laymen founded the Knights of Columbus in 1882, in the basement of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in New Haven, Connecticut.

The aim of the founder was to set up a parish-based lay organization that offered insurance benefits to the widows and children of members. In an era when parish and fraternal societies were popular, Father McGivney felt there should be some way to strengthen the religious faith of his flock and provide financial support for families overwhelmed by illness or the death of the breadwinner.

Today the Knights of Columbus have grown from that one local unit, or council, to over 12,000 councils in the United States (including Puerto Rico and Guam), Canada, Mexico, the Philippines, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Panama, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, Guatemala, Spain and in January 2006, the Knights of Columbus expand to Poland.

Membership is over 1.7 million members, plus their families - approximately 5.6 million people total - many of whom are actively involved in volunteer service programs for the Catholic Church, their communities, their families, young people and one another.

The four Principals of the Order are: Charity, Unity, Fraternity & Patriotism. We enjoy the rewards of good works and the company of some of the finest people anywhere "(Our brother knights! )" There’s always more that we can do, and we invite all Catholic gentlemen to join our efforts as a Knights of Columbus.

Council Meetings are the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 6:30 PM in the Knights Room of St. Margaret Mary's old Church.
